Coronavirus Update - April 10

As the need for medical supplies and other essentials goods have increased considerably due to COVID-19, the drop in demand for non-essential goods is resulting in containers being left at ports of import throughout the world. Many ocean carriers are offering alternative solutions and working with port authorities to aid in the storage of those goods with the
goal of easing port congestion.

Americas

  • US truckload rates have dropped below March rates but remain 5.2 percent higher than the same period last year.
  • American Airlines Cargo (AA Cargo) announced cargo-only flights between the US and South America, Europe and Asia. The existing service from Dallas Fort Worth to the Frankfurt Airport will remain and operate the roundtrip once per week.
  • Borders between Brazil and other countries have reduced working hours.
  • Cross border trucking between the US and Mexico and Canada continue to operate without issue.

United States – 467,184 confirmed cases (38% increase since Monday), 26,522 recovered, 16,736 deaths

EMEA

  • Beginning April 13, KLM is adding two aircraft to serve as freighters between Amsterdam and China.
  • UK airports are operational however some handling agents are applying a surcharge to cover costs due to a decrease in aircraft traffic.
  • UAE carriers Etihad and Emirates are increasing their cargo operations.
  • Pakistan extended the suspension of domestic and international flights to April 21. Cargo flights remain exempt from the ban.

Spain – 157,022 confirmed cases (16% increase since Monday), 55,668 recovered, 15,843 deaths
Italy – 143,626 confirmed cases (11% increase since Monday), 28,470 recovered, 18,279 deaths
Germany – 119,401 confirmed cases (19% increase since Monday), 52,407 recovered, 2,607 deaths
France – 118,790 confirmed cases (26% increase since Monday), 23,469 recovered, 12,228 deaths
Iran – 68,192 confirmed cases (13% increase since Monday), 35,465 recovered, 4,232 deaths

APAC

  • Trucking within China is operating without any major setbacks.
  • Following the 21-day Indian lockdown, the Directorate General of Shipping has imposed a 14-day quarantine on shipping vessels arriving from any port in China or any nation affected by the virus. If the vessel arrives 14 days after departure from the coronavirus-infected country that vessel is not required to comply.

China

  • 82,940 confirmed cases (.3% increase since Monday), 77,787 recovered, 3,340 deaths

  • Price increases are expected to continue until mid-April

*Aircraft from mainland China or South Korea will be limited to Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Osaka Kansai (KIX) international airports. Restrictions apply until
at least the end of April.
** Atlanta and New York City airports are operational for cargo, but staffing reductions are impacting efficiency. No freighters are flying in Denver as a
result of state government restrictions.
*** Restricted operations in India are impacting cargo flights; freighters are operating with reduced capacity. Customs of non-essential goods are under
constraints.
**** Madrid terminals are closed expect for essential goods. All other are operating normally for cargo only operations.

CMA CGM and Mediterranean Shipping Co. are offering a “Delay in Transit” option that allows shippers to store import containers at several transshipment hubs throughout Asia, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Road and Rail Transport – Updated 04.10.2020

  • Rail freight volumes have increased on the Express China Rail service connecting Xi’an to the with several European destinations. Cargo can reach Europe with 12 to 14 days. DHL Global Forwarding has also increased the frequency of its trains in both directions.
